Is too much freon bad for my Air Conditioner?

The specification plate on most condensing units lists the approximate pounds of freon required at a standard copper tubing length from the condenser to the coil. Longer copper means more freon, etc. However, when charging the unit a trained service tech not only checks the pressure in the "high side" but compares the temperature in the suction side to the ambient temperature. They should be approximately equal. Having too little freon will cause the system to ice up and work inefficiently. Having too much freon will cause the compressor to labor and work inefficiently. Either condition wastes energy and could cause long term damage to the unit
